A new finding from beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha reveals that online searches for “red nails” have exploded by 160% globally in the past 12 months.
At the exact same time, searches for “red nail theory” also skyrocketed by 158% worldwide, after Taylor Swift was pictured on Christmas Day at the Kansas City Chiefs game sporting the trending nail color, followed by Selena Gomez (founder of Rare Beauty) posting an Instagram selfie on the 30th of December with red nail polish.
Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez’s nail color choice and new romances with Travis Kelce and Benny Blanco have seemingly driven the demand for “red nail polish,” with Google searches exploding worldwide 131% in the past five years, a monumental spike in people Googling for the nail color.
The hashtag #rednailtheory has gone viral on TikTok and is filled with videos of users testing theory and claiming if it has worked for them. The hashtag #rednails has also gained 1.6 billion views worldwide.
The trending nail color has also made its way onto Pinterest, with an increase in searches for ‘red nails’ of 194% in the past year.
A spokesperson for Fresha said: “These findings highlight the influence celebrities and TikTok trends can have on fashion trends and beauty culture. Although the ‘red nail theory’ is down to personal belief, it’s interesting to see how Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez's new relationships and nail color have ignited a 158% search increase in 'red nail theory' worldwide.”
